[Salon] Astonishing statement on China by Jake Sullivan

That's actually quite an astonishing statement by Jake Sullivan (src: https://whitehouse.gov/briefing-room/speeches-remarks/2024/01/30/remarks-and-qa-by-national-security-advisor-jake-sullivan-on-the-future-of-u-s-china-relations/): "We realize that efforts, implied or explicit, to shape or change the PRC over several decades did not succeed." It's astonishing because it implies a complete disregard for China's sovereignty. Imagine China or Russia saying they're undertaking efforts "shape or change" America... And, by the way, it makes a complete mockery of international law. Article II of the UN Charter calls on all states "to respect the sovereignty, territorial integrity and political independence of other States"... (https://un.org/securitycouncil/content/purposes-and-principles-un-chapter-i-un-charter#:~:text=B.,political%20independence%20of%20other%20States.) I guess they're so used to being above the law, American exceptionalism is so part of the psyche, that they don't even realize how statements like this (let alone the actions these statements describe) sound to the rest of the world.
